Andrew Lloyd Webber - Requiem / Domingo, Brightman, ECO, Maazel»rank: 11462by: Andrew Lloyd Webber, English Chamber Orchestra, Lorin Maazel, Plácido Domingo, Sarah Brightman, Winchester Cathedral Choir
0ur opinion: essential recording:Before Andrew Lloyd Webber's seemingly endless run of Broadway shows, when he was known primarily for Jesus Christ Superstar, he managed to write this dramatic, tuneful, occasionally powerful religious work. Although Lloyd Webber takes some liberties with the text and organization of the traditional Requiem mass, the result is a unified and finely crafted composition. There are exciting moments in the 'Dies irae' and in the 'Lacrymosa', where voices and orchestra are most effectively used to convey the desperate yet hopeful feeling of the text. ...

William Byrd: Mass for Five Voices; Music for the Feast of Corpus Christi»rank: 231455from: Hyperion UK
0ur opinion: :Byrd's three Latin masses are among the finest choral works ever written, and this performance of the five-part mass by Winchester Cathedral Choir is among the best on disc. With its pleasingly bright and unified treble sound and clear, well-balanced inner voices, the textural beauty of Byrd's work comes through perfectly. The mass movements are interspersed with propers for the Feast of Corpus Christi, and the disc concludes with other Byrd compositions, including the exquisite motet Ave verum corpus. --David Vernier
