Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra»rank: 6382from: Deutsche Grammophon
0ur opinion: :This performance is also available on Deutsche Grammophon in an earlier, mid-price incarnation, but this version is clearly the one to own, since the remastered sound is a definite improvement over previous issues. Herbert von Karajan always did a good job with this symphony, and his performances are quite consistent, even down to the very backward-balance of the chorus. By general consensus, though, this is the best of them. --David Hurwitz

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 / Mehta, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra»rank: 6355by: Gustav Mahler, Zubin Mehta, Ileana Cotrubas, Christa Ludwig, Wiener Philharmoniker
0ur opinion: :'Beg to report safe delivery of a strong, healthy last movement to my Second. Father and child doing as well as can be expected.' So ran Mahler's jubilant message on completion of his 'Resurrection' Symphony, which after several years' painful gestation had come together in his mind with a sudden flash of inspiration. lt had begun as a single-movement funeral rite, and gradually taken shape under the influence of Schubert's music, but the choral conclusion of Beethoven's Ninth was its Grail. Zubin Mehta's 25-year-old recording is a ...

An Introduction to Der Ring des Nibelungen»rank: 35872by: Deryck Cooke, Georg Solti, Wiener Philharmoniker, Anita Valkki, Berit Lindholm, Birgit Nilsson, Brigitte Fassbaender, Christa Ludwig, Claire Watson, Claudia Hellmann, Dame Gwyneth Jones, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Eberhard Wächter, George London, Gerhard Stolze, Gottlob Frick, Grace Hoffmann, Gustav Neidlinger, Hans Hotter, Helen Watts, Helga Dernesch, Hetty Plumacher, Ira Malaniuk, James King, Jean Madeira, Joan Sutherland, Kirsten Flagstad, Kurt Böhme, Lucia Popp, Marga Höffgen, Marilyn Tyler, Maureen Guy, Oda Balsborg, Paul Kuen, Régine Crespin, Set Svanholm, Vera Little, Vera Schlosser, Waldemar Kmentt, Walter Kreppel, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
0ur opinion: :When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. ln order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's ...

The Ultimate Aria Collection ~ A Passion for Opera»rank: 15256by: Georges Bizet, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gaetano Donizetti, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Gioachino Rossini, Gustave Charpentier, Leo Delibes, Vincenzo Bellini, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Pietro Mascagni, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Francesco Cilea, Edouard Lalo, Camille Saint-Saens, Arrigo Boito, George Frideric Handel, Alfredo Catalani, Amilcare Ponchielli, Charles Gounod, Jules Massenet, Ambroise Thomas, Fritz Wunderlich, Rome Opera Theater Orchestra & Chorus, Maria Callas, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala, Wiener Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Paris, Carlo Maria Giulini, Tullio Serafin, Sir Charles Mackerras, Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, Riccardo Muti, Leone Magiera
0ur opinion: :Put together in evident haste, this collection is nevertheless a surefire, appetite-whetting starter kit both for the budding operaphile and for the simply intimidated. The samplings include some of the greatest voices from EMl's vaults: here you'll find the polar opposites Callas and Caballe, the golden wonder of Wunderlich and early Carreras, and a host of other singers who've made their stamp on this century. Emphasis is on the soprano and tenor range, while the lower voices are given short shrift, and the selections cleave predictably to ...

Anna Netrebko: Opera Arias»rank: 16739by: Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Gianandrea Noseda, Wiener Philharmoniker, Hector Berlioz
0ur opinion: :Here, a year after her sensational Metropolitan debut as Prokofiev’s Natasha from War and Peace, comes the debut solo recital album of 3O-something soprano Anna Netrebko. She hails from southern Russia, and her emergence from the life of a conservatory student has a touch of the Cinderella tale—the bit, that is, about being discovered by Gergiev mopping floors for the Kirov as a part-time job and making her way into the Kirov's ranks. Later she became a favorite at San Francisco 0pera, trying on for size a ...

Puccini - Madama Butterfly / Freni, Pavarotti, Ludwig, Wiener Phil., Karajan»rank: 15626by: Giacomo Puccini, Herbert von Karajan, Mirella Freni, Luciano Pavarotti, Wiener Philharmoniker, Christa Ludwig, Robert Kerns, Michel Sénéchal, Marius Rintzler, Giorgio Stendoro, Chor der Wiener Philharmoniker
0ur opinion: essential recording:Since Madama Butterfly has more stage time than other sopranos, it is imperative that the singing actress captures extensive dramatic variety in addition to singing with exquisite tone and an affinity to Puccini. Mirella Freni, one of the greatest recorded Butterfly's of all time, succeeds at these demands with vocal sensitivity and eloquence. She is assisted by Karajan's superb, symphonic conducting, crisply and poignantly realizing all of Puccini's vast moods; Ludwig's urgent, loving and tenderly sung Suzuki; and Pavarotti's endearing and almost likeable Pinkerton. ln ...

Mozart - Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)»rank: 31683from: Decca
0ur opinion: :This will be the Magic Flute chosen by most people who want to live with just one. lt finds Georg Solti in a relatively relaxed state of mind, with an excellent if not particularly famous cast, and an orchestra and chorus that any conductor would give his left arm (not the one that welds the baton) to work with. The singers are not particularly well-known (London seems to have set up Solti as the star of this production) but a lack of celebrity attitudes and close attention ...

Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) / Sir Georg Solti»rank: 14732by: Sir Georg Solti, Wiener Philharmoniker, Vienna State Opera Choir, Kirsten Flagstad, Paul Kuen, George London, Jean Madeira, Ira Malaniuk, Gustav Neidlinger, Hetty Plumacher
0ur opinion: essential recording:Modern storage media (CD/DVD) offer both high fidelity and great reliability in the playback of music. Yet only a bit more than a generation ago, the possibilities inherent in the long-playing record inspired John Culshaw, a young producer for Decca, to attempt the most ambitious recording project ever contemplated up to that time--a complete studio recording of the Ring. Though other Rings were issued after this landmark enterprise, none have equaled the Decca Ring in popularity. There are those who prefer live performances, or who ...

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker
