Bach: Magnificat; Easter Oratorio»rank: 35291by: Johann Sebastian Bach, Andrew Parrott, Emma Kirkby, Emily van Evera, Taverner Consort and Players, Evelyn Tubb, Margaret Cable, Stephen Charlesworth, Wilfried Jochens, Howard Crook, Simon Grant, Charles Daniels, Peter Kooy, David Thomas, Caroline Trevor
0ur opinion: :Andrew Parrott was the first conductor to adopt Joshua Rifkin's controversial one-singer-per-part approach to Bach's 'choral' music (other than Rifkin himself, that is). This very reasonably priced reissue sees Parrott applying the approach to four of Bach's most popular sacred works. 0n the whole, Parrott and his ensemble make a good case for both one-per-part practice and their own performances. 0nce the ear adjusts, the balance is excellent: the vocal parts don't dominate the orchestra (as many listeners accustomed to a chorus expect); they are ...

Purcell: Odes for St. Cecilia's Day - Music for Queen Mary / Taverner Consort»rank: 130117by: Henry Purcell, Emma Kirkby, Charles Daniels, David Thomas, John Mark Ainsley, Michael Chance, Choir & Players Taverner Consort, Roger Covey-Crump, Michael George, Simon Grant, Paul Elliott, Kevin Smith
0ur opinion: essential recording:Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort, Choir, and Players have made some of the finest Purcell recordings to have appeared since the period-instrument revival began; unfortunately, most of those discs had been out of print for years. Happily, Virgin has reissued some of Parrott's best work on this reasonably priced two-for-one release. The performances aren't just exemplary, they're something of a landmark: in them Parrott pioneered the now-standard practice of using high tenors rather than falsettists on some of Purcell's low-lying 'countertenor' parts. ...

Handel - Carmelite Vespers 1707 / Feldman · Kirkby · Van Evera · M. Cable · M. Nichols · Cornwell · Thomas · Parrott»rank: 111666by: George Frideric Handel, Taverner Choir & Players, Andrew Parrott, Mary Nichols, Jill Feldman, Emma Kirkby, Emily Van Evera, Joseph Cornwell, Margaret Cable, David Thomas
0ur opinion: :His own Lutheranism notwithstanding, Handel wrote some remarkable music for the Catholic liturgy while in Rome as a young man. ln our era they've been performed in the concert hall--large-scale, multi-movement pieces such as the robust Dixit Dominus and the gracious Nisi Dominus in particular coming across as miniature oratorios. But they were, in fact, church music--as Andrew Parrott reminds us with this speculative reconstruction of a lavish 17O7 Vespers service for which the young Handel provided music. The performance by Parrott and his Taverner ...

Carol Album: Seven Centuries of Christmas»rank: 31007from: EMI Records / Capitol
0ur opinion: :Most people think of Christmas carols as originating from ancient--or at least olden-times, and indeed, many of the most enduring ones have survived for many centuries. Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort take us back seven centuries, in fact, and thoughtfully mix the old tunes ('Swete was the song,' 'This endere nyghth,' 'Nova! nova!') with more recent tunes. Parrott's musicians offer interesting takes on such familiar carols as 'Silent Night' and 'God rest ye merry, gentlemen.' 'Silent Night' sounds like an Austrian folk tune, complete ...
