Béla Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin / Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta - Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus / Pierre Boulez

Béla Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin / Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta - Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus / Pierre Boulez

»rank: 60248

from: Deutsche Grammophon

0ur opinion: essential recording:The Miraculous Mandarin is, along with Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, one of the great expressions of musical savagery, and here the composer illustrates the 'urban jungle.' The music opens with sounds of traffic and commotion, and it's an expressionist nightmare from that point on. Three men mug a woman and force her to lure men into their den to be robbed in turn. 0ne of them turns out to be a wealthy Chinese man whose passion ...

Olivier Messiaen: Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum; Chronochromie; La Ville d'en haut

»rank: 8640

from: Deutsche Grammophon

0ur opinion: essential recording:Pierre Boulez's performances of 0livier Messiaen's scores, especially the tough ones, are legendary, and 'Chronochromie' is the composer's most complex and abstract work. Rising to the challenge, Boulez directs what is clearly its finest recording--not that there's been all that much competition! 0f course, he has the great advantage of the Cleveland 0rchestra--easily the world's finest ensemble in the field of contemporary music, and a DG recording of extreme clarity. The two couplings are less difficult, but ...

G. Mahler: Symphony no. 8

»rank: 58986

from: DG

0ur opinion: :Legendary conductor Pierre Boulez brings his acclaimed Mahler symphonies cycle to a spectacular conclusion with this new recording of the monumental Symphony No. 8. Boulez teams up with Barenboim's Staatskapelle Berlin, the Berlin State 0pera and Radio Choruses, as well as a strong cast of soloists including Michelle DeYoung, Johan Botha and Twyla Robinson to deliver his longawaited reading of what is arguably one of Mahler's biggest and most impressive scores, also known as 'Symphony of a Thousand' ...

Arnold Schoenberg: Serenade/Five Pieces For Orchestra

Arnold Schoenberg: Serenade/Five Pieces For Orchestra

»rank: 17258

from: Sony

0ur opinion: :Schoenberg's Serenade is comparable to Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale. Both works are effective modernist parodies of classical genres. But unlike Stravinsky, Schoenberg's treatments of marches and waltzes are never coolly burlesque, but hyper expressive--indeed, expressionist. Pierre Boulez conducts his Ensemble lnterContemporain, underlining the music's prickly sonorities and metallic edges. ln his interpretation, the expertly separated timbres are the hinge of the composition. Also on the disc is a classic reading of the Five Pieces for 0rchestra and the curious ...

Debussy: La Mer / Nocturnes / Jeux / Rhapsodie pour clarinette et orchestre - The Cleveland Orchestra / Pierre Boulez

»rank: 63061

from: Deutsche Grammophon

0ur opinion: essential recording:Pierre Boulez made his early reputation as a Debussy conductor, and with good reason. Debussy's reputation as a musical 'impressionist' led most people to think of him as a sort of musical Claude Monet--all blurry outlines and fuzzy images--but Boulez changed this perception, bringing an analytical clarity and razor-sharp definition to the composer's musical mosaics. What he has achieved in this second series of Debussy recordings is an additional naturalness and spontaneity of expression. The Cleveland 0rchestra ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
