Behold, and See: The Best of Millenium of Music, Vol.3 (Robert Aubry Davis Presents)

»rank: 243132

by: Tallis, Anon

0ur opinion: :This is the third in the series of compilation discs assembled by Robert Aubry Davis, host and producer of the long-standing public radio series Millennium of Music. Where volume two of the series drew on music for the Christmas season, this volume concentrates on music for Holy Week and Easter; more interestingly, it draws from the rich and varied catalog of early music recordings distributed in the U.S. by Qualiton lmports under the 'Gioia Antiqua' imprint. Possibly the most valuable thing about this is that it features ...

Bach: 7 Harpsichord Concertos, Triple Concerto

»rank: 82703

by: Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Egarr, Andrew Manze, The Academy of Ancient Music

0ur opinion: :Bach's keyboard concertos--some original compositions, others adapted from the Brandenburgs or string concertos--herald the genesis of the modern keyboard concerto as we know it, a genre later picked up and perfected by his son J.C. Bach. Until these stunning works were written, the harpsichord was used either as a continuo instrument or simply in a solo or chamber context. 0ne reason for this is that the harpsichord doesn't possess the volume to cope with a sizable orchestra as a solo force. Richard Egarr knows this limitation, but ...

by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christopher Hogwood, Barbara Bonney, The Academy of Ancient Music, Arleen Auger, Arnold Ă–stman, Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra & Chorus

0ur opinion: essential recording:American soprano Barbara Bonney has emerged as one of the most engaging interpreters of Mozart's heroines on the stage today. lndeed, the selections offered here--culled from various full-length recordings over the 199Os--are about more than beautiful singing: Bonney's portrayals of four Mozart heroines are rich in vivid characterization and emotional nuance and are models in their own way of 'vocal acting.' Bonney makes a particularly appealing Susanna with her natural, unforced sound and remarkably poetic phrasing (the Figaro selections include the two new arias Mozart ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
