Vivaldi - Gloria · Magnificat / Biccirè · Mingardo · York · Concerto Italiano»rank: 247385by: Antonio Vivaldi, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Patrizia Biccire, Sara Mingardo, Deborah York, Concerto Italiano, Akademie Vocal Ensemble
0ur opinion: essential recording:Don't let the startling double-time opening of this Gloria put you off--listen with an open mind and you'll be surprised how much sense it makes. Rinaldo Alessandrini's reading has many such surprises; some movements are taken very quickly, others surprisingly slowly, yet his choices seem fresh rather than perverse. The Magnificat is lesser-known and thus less surprising, but it's every bit as lively. The soloists all sing nicely (though Biccire doesn't blend well in the soprano duet); the clear-voiced York and vigorous Mingardo provide imaginative ...

Haydn: Heiligmesse; Paukenmesse»rank: 273868from: Philips Import
0ur opinion: :This pairing of the Heiligmesse and the Paukenmesse, both composed in 1796, is a fine idea. The Paukenmesse, also known as the 'Mass in Time of War' was composed when the Napoleonic War was at its peak; Haydn's wild use of tympani in the Agnus Dei movement and the trumpets and drums elsewhere are a sort-of Viennese answer to the menace. The Heiligmesse also has some martial qualities (its Agnus Dei has great majesty), but it is more soulful and somehow simpler, particularly in its solo vocal ...
