0ur opinion: :'Michael Gielen's Mahler cycle is now complete, and as predicted it moves straight to the top of the list as the most idiomatic and consistent single set currently available.' - CLASSlCST0DAY.C0M Gielen’s Mahler interpretations have attained an almost cult status among collectors. This unique program includes works by 2Oth century composer and fellow conductor Pierre Boulez.

Arnold Schoenberg: Moses Und Aron/Chamber Symphony No. 2, Op. 38»rank: 246063from: Sony
0ur opinion: :Pierre Boulez's 1974 recording of Schoenberg's brooding opera is sure to fascinate the audience for 2Oth-century music, but other opera lovers will probably find the disc somewhat tedious. Moses und Aron is a very curious work. Musical motives are mirrored in ramifications, but the overall conception is essentially plastic, rather than developmental or dramatic. Such a static canvas provides intriguing challenges for both the opera house and its audience. Gunter Reich as Moses and Richard Cassilly as Aron sing powerfully. --Joshua Cody

Boulez: Sur Incises/Messagesquisse/Anthèms 2»rank: 225733from: Deutsche Grammophon
0ur opinion: :To see the future of classical music, just look to the projects of Pierre Boulez. Whether conducting Bruckner, Mahler, or one of his own compositions, he continues to surprise, embellish, and reinvent the shape of music today. Sur lncises gathers three Boulez works that each focus, at least in part, on a singular instrument. The world-premiere title track uses three pianos, three harps, and three percussionists to create a dense, atonal, but very pianistic universe of sound. 0n repeated listenings, the abstract piece becomes more rewarding; you ...
