Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition; Stravinsky: Three Dances from Petrouchka»rank: 178875from: Dorian Recordings
0ur opinion: :lvan Moravec's performances of the Scherzos make an interesting contrast to the supercharged versions of Cyprien Katsaris (Teldec). Katsaris is often frenetically fast, and he convinces you by overwhelming you. Moravec is more nuanced, mellower, more downright sensible. Yet he never lacks for excitement, and in the end his playing is a more profound and satisfying statement of the music. The other selected Chopin pieces are just as satisfying, and the recording, made in the legendary Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, is extremely realistic. This is one ...

Samuel Ramey - A Date with the Devil»rank: 100906from: Naxos
0ur opinion: :lt's curious that Samuel Ramey has made such a specialty of diabolical roles, because his voice--although pure bass--has never had the jet-black timbre of a John Tomlinson or the threatening muscular attack of a Bryn Terfel. lndeed, it seems most comfortable in lighter repertory: Rossini, Mozart, anything that calls for grace and flexibility. But he has learned to slip a note of menace into the most elegantly well-turned phrase. His devils are urbane, sophisticated: evil in a suit and tie. And for the past six years, he's ...

The Art of Charles Dutoit [Bonus DVD]»rank: 143665from: Decca
0ur opinion: :'To understand Dutoit's gift, you have only to watch him lead an orchestra. Animated by the music, his conducting technique is perhaps the most graceful among living conductors. His gestural vocabulary is elegant, expressive, energetic yet tasteful, the perfect visual correlative of the music his orchestra plays. His long thin arms swirl in seamless semaphore movements, he sways like a willow tree, rising and falling like a cresting wave. He beats time with his left foot, but the rest of his body language is balletic, with ...

Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition: Gold Medalist»rank: 190819from: Harmonia Mundi Fr.
0ur opinion: :These are actual performances that helped Jon Nakamatsu win the gold medal at the Tenth Van Cliburn lnternational Piano Competition. The pianist's personality is the most obvious element, as it should be. His Brahms sonata is outstanding, meeting the extravagant technical demands head-on while making music at every moment--a fervent, youthful performance completely appropriate to the music. ln the Chopin, another technical showpiece, Nakamatsu also keeps the focus on the poetry of the music. His Stravinsky and Bolcom, while neither of them is in a 'difficult' style, ...
