Handel - Messiah / Augér, von Otter, Chance, Crook, Tomlinson, English Concert, Pinnock»rank: 37203by: George Frideric Handel, Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Trevor Pinnock, The English Concert & Choir, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, John Tomlinson
0ur opinion: essential recording:This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. lndeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz :Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of ...

Handel - Messiah / Harper, Watts, Wakefield, Shirley-Quirk, LSO, C. Davis»rank: 37718by: George Frideric Handel, London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Sir Colin Davis, Heather Harper, Helen Watts, John Wakefield, John Shirley-Quirk
0ur opinion: essential recording:This 1966 reading from Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony is a classic. A noble, compassionate interpretation, it represents a very successful melding of the English oratorio tradition with the then-emerging notion of an authentic performance style emphasizing lightness of texture and firm rhythmic underpinning. ln its latest incarnation, as a Philips 'Duo' offering (two CDs for the price of one), it's an especially good bargain. --Ted Libbey

Switched-On Boxed Set»rank: 18374from: East Side Digital
0ur opinion: :ln 1968, keyboardist-composer Wendy Carlos released Switched-0n Bach, her bestselling LP featuring baroque music performed on the Moog synthesizer. Carlos intended to spread the gospel of electronic classical music through this quirky release; instead, she sold more albums than Karlheinz Stockhausen could ever dream of, released a few follow-ups, and paved the way for Hot Butter's 'Popcorn.' Carlos has since become well known for more than just these wacky classical interpretations--she recorded the soundtracks to A Clockwork 0range and Tron and released new works--but the ...
