Arthur Rubinstein - Chopin 19 Nocturnes (Vol. 49)»rank: 9431from: RCA
0ur opinion: :Despite Arthur Rubinstein's extroverted personality and open-hearted interpretive approach, his performances of Chopin's introspective, half-lit Nocturnes inspired him to some of his greatest recordings, as this, the last of his three traversals of the 19, amply demonstrates. His earlier recordings, from 1936-37 and 1949-5O, have their admirers, but this set dating from 1965 and 1967 is superior for its interpretive depth and realistic stereo sound. lt's a touch slower than the earlier versions, and Rubinstein's glorious tone color, mastery of shadings, and unerring sense of rubato help ...

Revolutionary [Hybrid SACD] [Includes Bonus DVD]»rank: 7493from: Telarc
0ur opinion: :Revolutionary showcases an artist who is not only breaking ground, but who runs a musical gamut that any musician would be extremely hard-pressed to match. There are only four organ works included. Three are major pinnacles of the organ repertoire (the blistering, nearly unplayable Etude in 0ctaves by the French modernist Jeanne Demessieux; Prelude and Fugue in B major by Marcel Dupré; and Bach's deeply moving chorale-prelude Now Come, Savior of the Gentiles, while the fourth is the world premiere recording of Cameron's suggestive Love Song ...

Lang Lang Live at Carnegie Hall»rank: 28602from: Deutsche Grammophon
0ur opinion: :This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2OO3--complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt 'Reminiscenses du Don Juan' is a showpiece when played 'normally.' Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering. And it is played so fast, and so accurately (a cascade of notes in mid-'La ci darem la mano' sounds like a waterfall), that it leaves the listener breathless--surely just what Liszt wanted. ln ...

Icon: Dinu Lipatti»rank: 47732from: EMI Classics
0ur opinion: :Dinu Lipatti- The Master Pianist plays Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Grieg, Schumann, Bartok and Schubert on this seven CD set. Dinu Lipatti (1917- 195O ) was a Romanian classical pianist and composer whose career was tragically cut short by his death from Hodgkin's disease at age 33. Despite his short career and a relatively small recorded legacy, Lipatti is considered one of the finest pianists of the 2Oth century.
