Chopin, Liszt: Piano Concertos / Martha Argerich, London Symphony Orchestra»rank: 13519from: Deutsche Grammophon
0ur opinion: :There has never been a more exciting pianist that Martha Argerich. Throughout her career, any appearance by her guarantees sellout crowds and an evening of memorable, not to say insane, music making. She has always drastically limited her repertoire--about a dozen concertos, a few more solo and chamber works--and will not perform or record solo recitals at all any more. But every single thing that she has recorded is a prime recommendation, plain and simple. She's one of the very few artists whose recordings one should collect ...

Chopin: Piano Concertos nos. 1 & 2 / Dutoit, Argerich»rank: 42912by: Frédéric Chopin, Charles Dutoit, Martha Argerich, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal
0ur opinion: :Martha Argerich is one of our supreme pianists, and this disc shows her almost at her best. Every phrase is beautifully considered and executed, but there is still plenty of spontaneity in her playing. Alas for the flowers of youth. A couple of decades ago, Argerich played this music (on two separate Deutsche Grammophon recordings) with even more fervor and spontaneity, and the accompaniments were more incisive and more clearly recorded than these. As Chopin wrote these concertos so early in his career, one can't help thinking ...

Artur Rubinstein - The Chopin Collection: The Nocturnes»rank: 38924from: RCA
0ur opinion: :Whether you are a musical scholar in search of artistic perfection, or an ordinary soul wanting to create a romantic mood, this complete collection of Chopin's nocturnes delivers. The nocturnes, which by definition are dreamy, pensive compositions, are fully realized by Artur Rubinstein's indescribably delicious interpretation. He captures all the fantastic imagery with crisp, dynamic playing, never once entering the realm of bathos. A must-have for any classical collection worth its weight in G clefs. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Hélène Grimaud plays Chopin & Rachmaninov»rank: 96421from: Deutsche Grammophon
0ur opinion: :Hélène Grimaud's releases on DG have each been built around a 'concept.' Here, it's death and transcendence. The philosophically bent can get Grimaud's explanation in the booklet notes, while the musical among us can just listen to a stimulating program of standard repertory freshened by one of today's outstanding younger pianists. ln the Chopin Sonata, Grimaud's volatile first movement and delicately colorful finale provide the tone and resolution required by both composer and her own philosophical outlook. The latter, though, means a dry-eyed Funeral March shorn of ...
