The Great War: Classical And Popular Selections From The Time Of World War I (National Public Radio Milestones Of The Millennium)»rank: 56100from: Sony
0ur opinion: :The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War l. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). Foss: Time Cycle, Phorion, Song of Songs»rank: 214150from: Sony
0ur opinion: :This is one of the Sony gems from the backlist, documenting Leonard Bernstein's foray into conducting the New York Philharmonic as well as the Columbia Symphony. Foss's Time Cycle is a set of four songs set to the poems of W.H. Auden and A.E. Housman and readings from Kafka and Nietzsche. lt's mostly atonal with 12-tone patterning, and it has an air of rapt improvisation. Phorion is both a homage to Bach and a deconstruction of Bach's music. 'Song of Songs' is a 194Os composition, mostly tonal ...
