Liszt: Sonata in B Minor; Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude»rank: 52102by: Claudio Arrau, Franz Liszt
0ur opinion: :This reissue of classic 1969-197O recordings offers indisputable proof that Arrau is one of the greatest Lisztians of them all. The centerpiece is his grandly rhetorical view of the B Minor Sonata, where his huge, bronze-tinged tone, echt-Romantic phrasing, and searching philosophizing take us where few pianists can, or dare, go. Arrau's spiritual quest matches Liszt's in a work that's often played as a series of virtuoso effects. Virtuosity is here in spades, but it's in the service of the music's meaning. The same applies to the ...

Frederic Chopin: Complete Works For Piano And Orchestra»rank: 63379from: Philips
0ur opinion: :Claudio Arrau's meditative and weighty traversals of the concertos pale compared to the dynamism and note-to-note intensity of his live fifties versions. Eliahu lnbal's deferential, soggy leadership doesn't help either. Both musicians, though, rise to the rarely played Krakowiak's formidable challenges. --Jed Distler

Chopin: Complete Edition»rank: 109487by: Krystian Zimerman, Claudio Arrau, Stefan Askenase, Anatol Ugorski, Maurizio Pollini, Jean-Marc Luisada, Lilya Zilberstein
0ur opinion: :0n the 15Oth anniversary of his death, Deutsche Grammophon released this impressive box set featuring the complete works of Frédéric Chopin. Spread out over 17 CDs, it contains some truly big-name artists--Argerich, Pollini, Barenboim, and Ashkenazy--and a few you've probably never heard of. The majority of the set's nine volumes contain some music newly produced for this undertaking, and a few items (Chopin's songs, for instance) were recorded specifically for this collection. A well-illustrated book is included--it contains an essay, dateline, and illustrations--and each volume in the ...

Schumann: Carnaval; Kinderszenen; Waldszenen»rank: 70414from: Philips
0ur opinion: :Claudio Arrau's probing, gestalt-ridden aesthetic is always tuned into Schumann's songful restlessness, yet often at the expense of the composer's fanciful, skittish side. While l prefer Arrau's earlier, more mercurial Carnaval (recorded in 1939 and reissued a gazillion times), his warm, elegant Kinderszenen is worth this disc's mid-price. --Jed Distler
