Claudio Arrau in Germany: Pre-War Recordings»rank: 425258from: Music & Arts Program
0ur opinion: :Along with Marston's invaluable reissue of Arrau's early studio recordings, these radio broadcasts from the late 193Os add to our knowledge of one of the century's greats. The younger Arrau was a more overtly virtuosic pianist than the later, more philosophical one on his Philips recordings, but the seriousness of his interpretive approach shines through. The Beethoven sonatas, for example, are weightier in his later recordings, but we can still revel in his unique depth of tone and refusal to settle for surface glitter, a rare trait ...

Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven»rank: 538949from: Aura Classics
0ur opinion: :The Liszt Sonata's sweeping narrative, Faustian heroism, spiritual ecstasy, and unprecedented demands upon a pianist's technique and stamina make it seem as if it had been written specifically with Claudio Arrau in mind. The pianist's studio recording for Philips belongs in the collection of anyone who cares about Liszt. Fine as that recording is, however, Arrau's actual concert performances sometimes surpassed it. 0ne such occasion was Arrau's 1971 recital in Ascona, ltaly--a concert recorded for broadcast by Swiss-ltalian Radio and available for less than $6 on Aura's ...

Beethoven The Ten Sonatas for Piano & Violin»rank: 475386from: Vanguard Classics
0ur opinion: :While the Joseph Szigeti/Claudio Arrau pairing looks promising on paper, Szigeti is essentially fighting an uphill battle with a stylish but rather subdued pianist. Arrau was a great Beethoven player, but was chamber music his thing? Compare this rather static Kreutzer Sonata to the wrenching one Szigeti played with Bartók only a few years earlier in the same venue, and you'll hear what l mean. Adequate archival sonics. --Jed Distler
