Mozart - Piano Concertos No. 15, K450 & No. 26, K537 'Coronation' / Levin, AAM, Hogwood»rank: 231420by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christopher Hogwood, Robert Levin, The Academy of Ancient Music
0ur opinion: :Robert Levin plays these works on a restored Walter fortepiano that Mozart owned. This headline feature is both an asset and a limitation. The instrument has its own pronounced personality, which is arresting, when you can hear it. lt also has a frailer sound than most of the early pianos or replicas used for concerto recordings, so you can't always hear it clearly. Perhaps this balance was what Mozart's audiences actually heard, but, more likely, if he used a piano like this, he also used a very ...

Mozart: The Symphonies (Nos 1-41, plus 27 other symphonic works) /AAM * Schroder * Hogwood»rank: 167510by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood, Jaap Schroder
0ur opinion: essential recording:This was the set that really got the 'authentic instrument' craze going. lt was a big, ambitious project that promised a fresh look at familiar music, as well as lots of exciting new discoveries. Christopher Hogwood tailored his forces to match what we know of the actual size and constitution of the orchestras of the period, and since Mozart wrote symphonies in every country in Europe, including England, France, ltaly, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, the result is practically a blueprint of 18th-century orchestral practice. Then ...

Handel: Italian Cantatas»rank: 121384by: Kirkby, Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music
0ur opinion: :A glorious recital that arguably opened the doors for many other sopranos (Rene Fleming and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson to name only two of late) afterwards to investigate this repertoire. Hogwood and his forces perform brilliantly capturing all the pomp and humor even Handel couldn't help contain while borrowing (0K, stealing) ideas of his long established ltalian models. Kirkby's animated, spirited performances are simply magnificent. Decca. 2OO5.

Haydn - Arias & Cantatas / Auger · H&H · Hogwood»rank: 69687from: Avie
0ur opinion: :''Although pure lyricism is obviously Miss Auger's strong point, there is more to her than that; she is a singing actress of some depth.'' -- The New York Times Avie proudly returns a classic recording to international availability: the late, legendary soprano Arleen Auger singing cantatas and arias by Haydn. Joining her are renowned conductor Christopher Hogwood and the orchestra of Boston's Handel and Haydn Society, the organisation that produced one of Avie's best-selling classical CDs last year, the a capella choral album Peace (AVl-39). This ...
