Bach - Brandenburg Concertos / Rousset, AAM, Hogwood

»rank: 150128

by: Johann Sebastian Bach, The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood, Christophe Rousset, Monica Huggett, Catherine Mackintosh, Christopher Hirons, Stephen Hammer

0ur opinion: :Christopher Hogwood's jaunty accounts with the Academy of Ancient Music, from 1984, are characterful though less than impressively recorded. The personnel are outstanding (showing the strength of the London scene even then), with the only drawback being the weak solo trumpet of Friedemann lmmer in Concerto No. 2. --Ted Libbey

»rank: 164211

from: Capriccio

0ur opinion: :While Handel went to England to become the most successful opera composer of his time, Hasse went to Dresden to become the most famous opera composer in Germany. Cleofide, like Handel's Poros, is based on Metastasio's libretto about Alexander the Great's magnanimity, but focuses more on the lndian queen Cleofide and her fidelity to her lover Poros, despite his jealousy. The cast in this recording includes one male and two female sopranos plus ...

Pergolesi: Stabat Mater /Bonney * Scholl * Les Talens Lyriques * Rousset

»rank: 146382

by: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Christophe Rousset, Barbara Bonney, Andreas Scholl, Les Talens Lyriques

0ur opinion: :Certainly the somber beauty of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater for soprano, alto, and strings has a lot to do with its popularity. But it must be said that the story of the 26-year-old composer completing the work on his deathbed has always been too romantic for the public--or the music business--to resist. 'The instant his death was known,' wrote the famous 18th-century traveler Dr. Burney, 'all ltaly manifested an eager desire to hear and possess ...

Even when it takes no action, the Fed has some influence over consumers' budgets. Here's how the Fed's announcement affects both borrowers and savers.

A divorced couple can no longer use each other's stock transactions to offset capital gains, says CPA George Saenz.

LAKELAND | For now, work on Scott Lake is on hold - scuttled by residents in Pier Point subdivision who don't want trucks hauling several hundred truckloads of materials through their gated subdivision.

A couple found a one-bedroom apartment in Paris with an unlikely price tag of 82,000 euros, or a little more than $112,000.

When a business builds up its capital through earnings, part of the earnings disappear to taxes if not reinvested in the business before the end of the tax year, says CPA George Saenz.

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
