Brahms: Violin Concerto»rank: 188315from: Angel Records
0ur opinion: :ltzhak Perlman gives a Romantic reading of this concerto, dripping with sentiment, sweetness of tone, and portamento. No one comes close to him in imparting a broad, grand feeling to the music. Carlo Maria Giulini's accompaniment has a warm-blooded, meaty substantiality, and the Chicagoans make a glorious sound under his baton; their tremolos fairly quiver with excitement. The performance is full of life, and spirit--in the sense of both joy and spirituality. The 1976 recording establishes an excellent balance between the participants, close-up but true. --Ted Libbey

0ur opinion: :Politics, love, and family conflict make a heady brew in Verdi's masterpiece, originally set to a French text for Paris in 1867. ln 1882, the composer made an ltalian version with big cuts, lopping off the entire first act, which here is restored by Giulini. His pointed, nuanced conducting makes this recording the best available. An ideal Don Carlo requires the unattainable: five great singers and an expert Verdi conductor. This 197O set has glorious voices that don't dig deep enough for this multilayered drama. The young ...
