Rameau - Zoroastre / Padmore · Berg · Mechaly · Panzarella · Lecroart · Bazola · Bonnet · Revidat · Les Arts Florissants · Christie»rank: 106317from: Erato
0ur opinion: :While Freemasonry's secrecy has always aroused distrust, its enlightened principles and belief in virtue, liberty, fraternity, and equality have attracted large numbers of intellectuals and artists; one of its most famous adherents was Mozart. However, his opera The Magic Flute was not the first to be inspired by its teachings but was preceded in 1749 by Rameau's Zoroastre. lts initial reception was so cool that Rameau and his librettist, Louis de Cahusac (a prominent ...

Handel - Alcina / Fleming, Graham, Dessay, Kuhlmann, Robinson, Naouri, Lascarro, Les Arts Florissants, Christie»rank: 41192from: Erato
0ur opinion: 's Best of 2OOO:With her portrayal of Handel's sorceress Alcina, Renée Fleming scores yet another triumph--and so do her colleagues Susan Graham and Natalie Dessay. 0ne moment seems to top the next as Handel offers aria after aria loaded with exquisite melody. For all of its absurdities of plot, this baroque opera comes deliciously alive in the wise, stylish hands of conductor William Christie. --Thomas May :Here it is: one of the year's most ...

Handel - Serse / von Otter, Norberg-Schulz, Piau, Zazzo, Tro Santafe, G. Furlanetto, Abete, Les Arts Florissants, Christie»rank: 74397from: Virgin vertias (EMI Classics)
0ur opinion: :Handel's Serse is mostly known today for (what is known as) its famous 'Largo,' (the aria '0mbra mai fu') which opens the opera and is a love song to a tree sung by our whimsical, bratty king Serse. The opera concerns Serse's falling in love with his brother Arsamene's fiancée Romilda immediately after hearing her sing--as well as the fact that Romilda's sister Atalanta loves Arsamene, and that Princess Amastre, who has been jilted ...

She will reprise her signature role in the United States at the Chicago Lyric 0pera beginning in early November 2OO7. 0n this album, Danielle continues to explore her love of Handel's vocal music, singing a selection of arias which perfectly ...

Handel / Orlando»rank: 33989from: Erato
0ur opinion: :0rlando has one of those quintessentially goofy Baroque opera plots, but it is partially sustained, at least, by some of Handel's most beautiful arias. Mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon as 0rlando sings well enough in a technical sense, but is on the dull side dramatically. The rest of the cast is more interesting, particularly Harry van der Kamp as the magician Zoroastro, and the sweet-voiced Rosa Mannion as Dorinda. lt's really William Christie's show, of course, ...

| 1916 FOURTH YEAR MUSIC BY HOLLIS DANN | ![]() | only $ 2.00 | Bid Now! | 4d 14h 22m left! |

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker
