Beethoven's Wig, Vol. 2: More Sing-Along Symphonies»rank: 2071from: Rounder / Umgd
0ur opinion: :From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's 'Violin Concerto #2,' Strauss' 'Blue Danube Waltz') and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece ...

Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner»rank: 3736by: George Frideric Handel, Neville Marriner, Elly Ameling, Philip Langridge, Academy & Chours of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Anna Reynolds, Gwynne Howell
0ur opinion: :Neville Marriner's 1976 account of the Covent Garden version of the score (1743), with the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and soloists Elly Ameling, Anna Reynolds, Philip Langridge, and Gwynne Howell, is positively plush-sounding but nicely animated. l'd love to have this kind of string tone for, say, the Dvorák Serenade, but for Handel it may be just a bit much. --Ted Libbey

American Angels»rank: 2151from: Harmonia Mundi Fr.
0ur opinion: :This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual 'early music' periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing 'fa, so la' exercises, ...
