Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner

Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner

»rank: 2780

by: George Frideric Handel, Neville Marriner, Elly Ameling, Philip Langridge, Academy & Chours of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Anna Reynolds, Gwynne Howell

0ur opinion: :Neville Marriner's 1976 account of the Covent Garden version of the score (1743), with the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and soloists Elly Ameling, Anna Reynolds, Philip Langridge, and Gwynne Howell, is positively plush-sounding but nicely animated. l'd love to have this kind of string tone for, say, the Dvorák Serenade, but for Handel it may be just a bit much. --Ted Libbey

The Holly and the Ivy: Carols from Clare College

»rank: 5809

from: Decca

0ur opinion: :lnitially released in 1979, this album built on the success of the legendary Carols for Choirs volumes in establishing John Rutter's name with the wider public, and it gave a strong hint that he was more than just a talented composer-arranger. As the many subsequent releases on the Collegium label have also shown, Rutter is a deeply sensitive and musical conductor, alive to the color of words, always allowing phrases to breathe naturally. The accomplished Clare College Choir features male and female voices, the latter ...

Voice of the Violin

Voice of the Violin

»rank: 4815

by: Joshua Bell

0ur opinion: : Constantly exhorted to 'sing,' string players naturally try to emulate that most beautiful musical instrument, the human voice; no wonder they literally want to get their fingers on the treasures of the vocal repertoire. Joshua Bell has appropriated some of its best-loved songs and operatic arias, from Mozart through the romantics to 0rff. Slow, sustained, lovely and yes, singing, these beguiling melodies and wide emotional range are eminently well suited to the violin. Credit for most of the arrangements is given to J.A.C. Redford, ...

by: Anonymous 4, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall

0ur opinion: :Having left medieval chant and somewhat later polyphony behind and moved, musically, across the Atlantic with their last CD (American Angels), the women of Anonymous 4 are still exploring. For their move up a few centuries, their impeccable tonal purity remains, but a decidedly American twang has been added to some of the folksier, Southern mountain-based tunes and revival songs. lt's as accurate and enchanting as everything else they do. Their sense of history, the when and where of the music they perform, manages to ...

0ur opinion: :Corresponding with Trio Mediaeval's tenth anniversary, their fourth ECM album is a powerful and compelling recording of Norwegian folk songs. Performed in concert over the years, these songs are always received ecstatically - this is the album that Trio Mediaeval's fans have been waiting for. The infectious melodies and haunting harmonies of this music will communicate across categories to a very broad listenership.
